June 1st is Opening Day & The Foodie 4 Mile!

Howdy, Northeast Runners and Walkers!  The Foodie Four Mile – Run to the Market is less than two weeks away!  Put on your shoes and run with the veggies!

The leek’s the one to beat! He’s in the ground, all over town, and already registered for the Foodie Four Mile! Spring into action and register as your favorite vegetable today!

YOU CAN REGISTER:

  • Right now at www.active.com.  (Registration on active.com closes May 30th).
  • In person at the Eastside Food Co-op (2551 Central Ave NE) on Thursday May 30th or Friday May 31st between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m.  It’ll be quick, easy, convenient — and instantly gratifying, since you’ll get your race packet right then and there.
  • On race day at the B.F. Nelson park start/finish line between 6:45 and 7:45 a.m.  But registering before race day will help insure there is no delay in receiving your market race apron!

AWESOME COURSE, SNACKS AND VOLUNTEERS:

The course starts at B. F. Nelson Park, winds along the Mississippi River through the St. Anthony West, Nicollet Island, and St. Anthony Main districts. Birds and blossoms on every block, guaranteed! We cross the Stone Arch Bridge and run the river’s other side.  Stop at the 2-mile mark water stop under the Hennepin Bridge and give a shout out to Girl Scout Troop 13533, who is earning their volunteer badge for helping out.   Then finish the last two on the wooded west side riverfront parks and Boom Island before finishing back at B.F. Nelson Park for a smorgasbord of foodie delights.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Foodie race without great post-race treats supplied by sponsors Equal Exchange, Eastside Food Co-op, Great Harvest Bread Company, and Chowgirls!  And thanks to TruStone Financial for sponsoring the water stops.

AND WHAT ABOUT THAT SWAG:
All participants will receive a runner’s apron (premiering our new logo!) complete with five Market coupons – good same as cash at the Northeast Farmers Market during the 2013 market season.
So consider  pushing yourself for the “Foodie Four and a Half” — the “half” being the leisurely jog from B.F. Nelson to University and Seventh Avenue, home of good food in Northeast since 1999!
The Foodie won’t just be fun, fit, and friendly – it will also be MISSION-DRIVEN
We will have a master recycler on site making the Foodie our most educational no-waste event ever!
Your race registration supports your Northeast Farmers Market and the Emergency Foodshelf Network! Since we’re donating to the Harvest for the Hungry program, which purchases produce from local farms to provide to Minnesotans facing hunger, your race registration also supports local farmers who could really use a boost following this record-breaking spring.
…and, after the registration, after the run, and after the treats, head over to the little market that could to support our very own homegrown marketeer heroes!
Beat the leek! Or just plant yourself beside him. Either way, we’ll see you bright and early on June 1st!
FOODIE FAQs
  • Will I be timed? The Foodie is a “fun run.” There will be a clock at the finish but it will be as competitive as you make it.
  • What should I bring? Dogs, strollers, and especially costumes are welcome! But leave your trash at home — it’s a no waste event!
  • What if I have a question about the Foodie Four Mile that is asked less frequently? Contact Chris Linde at chrislinde06@gmail.com.

Foodie 4 Mile – Race to the Market on Opening Day!

The Foodie 4 Mile is a fundraiser for the Northeast Farmers Market and the Emergency Foodshelf Network.

Our first ever fun run will take Market goers literally over the river and through the woods…

We’ll start in Northeast at the iconic Pioneers Statue in B.F. Nelson Park, then wind along the Mississippi River through the St. Anthony West, Nicollet Island, and St. Anthony Main districts. After crossing the Stone Arch Bridge, we’ll enjoy a different view of the riverfront, then pause under the Hennepin Avenue Bridge for a drink of water. The second half of the run will take us through the wooded west side riverfront parks and Boom Island Park, and then it’s back to B.F. Nelson for refreshments!

With a name like Foodie Four Mile, you know it’s going to be good. We’ve lined up our friends at the Eastside Food Co-op, Equal exchange, and Great Harvest to provide the after race smorgasbord. Highlights include cookies, bananas, trail mix, wheat biscuits, and iced coffee and tea.

This is a green event with no plastic bags or bottles! Dogs, strollers and costumes are welcome!

Register today to reserve your market coupons and runner’s apron:  www.active.com

The NEFM wants YOU to volunteer!

Attention friends and fans! Are you a ninja of efficiency? Do you love the Northeast Market? We want YOU to join the Market Do It Crew! The Northeast Farmers Market wants your mind and muscles to become a Set-Up and Tear-Down trooper of the Market.

The Do It Crew will be made up of able body persons that are willing to donate their time to help make a productive contribution to the Northeast community and create a great social gathering every Saturday from June-October!

With a properly enrolled Crew, we can set-up or tear-down in a half hour. This includes popping up tents, setting up tables/chairs/signs, prepping the musician stage, generator and parking lot. Morning Crews put it out, Afternoon Crews take it in.

No good deed goes unnoticed. While this is a volunteer opportunity, there will be great benefits! Everyone that signs up for the Do It Crew will be entered into a drawing at the Harvest Gala for a fabulous prize and special recognition. Also, at the end of the year, rewards will be given for the top volunteers of the Morning Crew and Afternoon Crew.

$100 for top dog
$75 for second place
$50 for third place
$10 for fourth, fifth and sixth place

Volunteer Groups are welcome, too! So, come on, join us and hang out with friendly folks and enjoy the sweet feeling of accomplishment.

Contact Chris from the Afternoon Crew for more details or to take the Crew Pledge: chrislinde06@gmail.com

Northeast Farmers Market and Budding Farmers!

The Northeast Farmers Market has joined the new Budding Farmers program!

Budding Farmers is an innovative enrichment program that connects children with healthy food found at their local farmers market. During the summer, children in the Budding Farmers program will receive weekly fun and engaging take-home lesson plans, kid-friendly recipes and art projects at their local farmers market!

There’s more! Budding Farmers will also receive a farmers market passport! Each week your farmers market will name a “farm of the week”, Budding Farmers will then have the opportunity to visit the farm’s booth. They will receive a sticker from the farmer, each sticker a Budding Farmer earns shows they learned a little bit about the farm and what they grow.

Learn more about the program and how to sign up! It is perfect for kids the ages of 3-8 years!

Wanted- Volunteers to help the NEFM!

We are always welcoming new Market Volunteers!  Whether it’s for set-up or tear-down, volunteers are essential to every aspect of our Market. Without volunteers we simply wouldn’t be able to meet our goals of supporting local farmers and educating the public on the importance of eating health and buying locally.

There are two big market events that requires a little extra love from volunteers: the Corn and Brat Feed and Taste of Northeast. We will need help to take down the tents, fold and put away tables and chairs and do various sorts of light duty to get the parking lot clean and clear!

If you would like to learn more about becoming a volunteer, please contact: chrislinde06@gmail.com

Attention Market Vendors!

Are you a vendor looking for a market to call home? Is your specialty cheese or plants or do you sell fresh water fish? You’ve come to the right place. We are now accepting applications!

The Northeast Minneapolis Farmers Market, notably the first community-based farmers market in the city, is an intimate gathering place in a residential neighborhood. Situated in the parking lot of St. Boniface Church, our space is shaded by mature trees and bordered by sidewalks. You’ll find ample, easily accessible street parking for vendors and customers, though many of our guests like to walk or bike. The market is a casual place where an average of 1,200 weekly visitors can leisurely stroll from stall to stall as they mingle with friends, participate in children’s activities, enjoy a prepared lunch, and get to know the locals who provide their healthy food and goods.

We would love to have you participate in our Market whether it is for the full season or half season. If you are interested in learning more or have any questions, please contact the Market Manager at:  sarah@northeastmarket.org.

The  Northeast Farmers Market is held on Saturdays, rain or shine, starting June  1st – October 19th from 9am-1pm.

Looking forward to a new and exciting season!

NEFM Winter Market!

Currently on it’s 3rd season, the Winter Market has become a popular spot for NE residents to shop and visit with some of their favorite vendors from the summer market. Up to 12 vendors display their goods for sale. Some of the items available are baked goods, arts & crafts, honey, potatoes, apples, jams, meats & eggs, and fresh handmade veggie spring rolls. The Winter Market also offers local live music while you shop, a masseuse offering chair massage and the non-profit organization “Friends of the Northeast Library” will have a cart full of great books for only a small donation.

Visit us on February 9th, March 9th and April 13th (second Saturdays) from 11am – 2pm at the Eastside food Co-op.

To learn more about becoming a vendor for the 2013 summer season, or if you are a musician or a local non-profit organization looking to join us for a weekend, please contact the Market Manager at: sarah@northeastmarket.org
